This book is a collection of works by the British sculptor and artist Richard Long (1945-), published in conjunction with his 1991 exhibition at the Hayward Gallery in London. Long departed from the traditional materials and techniques of sculpture, such as iron and bronze, and instead ventured outside the studio, creating works in natural landscapes using materials like stones, rocks, earth, mud, and wood, arranged in the simplest geometric patterns: points, lines, and circles. His student works, which presented "a single line" carved directly into the earth simply by walking, were conceptual and also marked the dawn of a distinctly British "landscape art," setting him apart from American land art, exemplified by the works of Robert Smithson, which employed heavy machinery. The book, conceived and laid out by Long himself, comprehensively presents his work chronologically, covering his activities from the 1960s to 1991. It clearly demonstrates his creative trajectory, centered on a dialogue with the landscape through Walking. It also includes an homage, Old Muddy, by his close friend Hamish Fulton. This is an important record conveying the trajectory of Richard Long, considered one of the most important artists in contemporary art, and it is a beautiful book that also offers a glimpse of Long's "clear, unwavering spirit," akin to a Zen monk or itinerant priest, "carving into the earth while surrendering to the flow of nature, yet maintaining his strong will."
