It consists of two volumes: Sculpture and Archaeology (400 pages) and Painting, Crafts, and Calligraphy (384 pages). Color illustrations are only in the frontispiece, with the majority being black and white photographs.
It traces the origins of Japanese Buddhist art in India, China, and the Korean Peninsula, and also features Japanese Buddhist art that was influenced by them.
It is a large-format book, 37 cm tall, 26.7 cm wide, and 8.5 cm thick for the two volumes.
